I've been traveling and my access to the internet and to the news have been spotty since the election.
The results? It looks like we may have lost both houses of the legislature. The pros are that I hope this causes the Republicans to undergo some deep soul searching and get back in touch with their base values. Also, I am encouraged by some of the types of democrats the DNC had to run to win their races--conservative leaning, pro-gun democrats. The con is I worry for the future as jihadis learn that not only can they make the US cut and run with enough violence ala Mogadishu, but now they are further emboldened by the fact that if they commit enough violence, they can swing US elections. As Osama Bin Laden said, "Americans have no stomach for the fight."
Even though there may be some more conservative leaning democrats in
office now, they are freshman without much influence in the party.
Let's see what kind of agenda speaker Pelosi tries to push through. I
don't expect them to take the high road though. If anything, expect 2
years of dragging the country through the mud as the Democrats try to
get their revenge for Saint Bill's impeachment. I think this course
while being called for by the parties fringe elements would be a mistake and damage not only the nation but also their long-term grasp on power.
From a Second Amendment perspective, Dave Kopel
is saying that the election was more or less a wash and he notes the
hopeful start of a long term trend in pro-gun democrats. I am hoping
that what we are seeing is the death of gun control as a national
agenda. But Schumer, Pelosi, and Bloomberg will probably prove me wrong (via Uncle's post-election roundup).
Keep and bear arms has a poll
where you can express your opinion about the election and its impact on
your gun rights. I won't spoil the surprise but the results are
generally what you might expect them to be.
Via Instapundit, Todd Zywicki
is noting that the 3% of the vote the Libertarian candidate received in
Montana would have been enough to swing the race and the Senate to the
Republicans. Hopefully the GOP sits up and take note. Generally, I
have not been a fan of casting a Libertarian protest vote, at least,
not in close races. But as Republicans start losing critical races by
the margin of disaffected conservative voters, hopefully they sit up
and take note and do some soul searching as I said.
I apologize for the rambling nature of this post. I have to rush off to a meeting.
