I missed this in the runnup to the election. New York State has "closed a loophole" that let you get probation for possession of an "illegal gun." As Brent at Maine-Crossroads notes, "Illegal guns" are your guns. Even a fully legal to own, legitimately purchased, licensed, registered, gun can be "illegal" under this law. Bloomberg and Pataki don't differentiate between "unlawful possession" which can occur quite innocently and accidentally and a truly illegal gun possessed with nefarious intent.
New York State has long taken a hard line against interstate travel and doesn't even recognize many cases protected by the FOPA. This new law in New York covers a loaded firearm, which is outside of the scope of the FOPA so you will have little recourse to defend yourself. The minimum penalty is a 3 1/2 sentence. Be careful out there.
[UPDATE] Speaking of Bloomberg, ironically one of his jihad on guns partners has just plead out of one felony count down to 2 misdemeanor counts on weapons possession. By Bloomberg and Pataki's definition, Mayor Melton was carrying an "illegal gun" and would be subject to a mandatory 3 1/2 year prison term in New York State. This should illustrate to Mayor Mad Mike clearly and without question what utter nonsense this law is.
