Yesterday, I covered four anti-gun bills currently in the house (this morning I added one I found in the Senate). Today, some good gun bills that need your and your congressman's support:
1) H.R. 266, "To amend title 18, United States Code, to provide a national standard in accordance with which nonresidents of a State may carry concealed firearms in the State."
S. 388 is the matching bill in the Senate according to the NRA , but I can't find the text for it yet.
The title says it all. This is national carry reciprocation and it would allow a person who has a CCW in ANY state to carry in ANY other state.
Personally, I'm not happy with this strong armed method of pushing CCW through but for many states like NJ, it is the only way it is likely ever to happen.
2) H.R. 73, "Citizens' Self-Defense Act of 2007"
This is bill is quite interesting in what it might mean to the NJ FID system. It reads:
SEC. 3. RIGHT TO OBTAIN FIREARMS FOR SECURITY, AND TO USE FIREARMS IN DEFENSE OF SELF , FAMILY, OR HOME; ENFORCEMENT.
(a) Reaffirmation of Right- A person not prohibited from receiving a firearm by Section 922(g) of title 18, United States Code, shall have the right to obtain firearms for security, and to use firearms--
(1) in defense of self or family against a reasonably perceived threat of imminent and unlawful infliction of serious bodily injury;
This bill as I read it would assert our right to purchase a weapon for defense against a perceived imminent threat. Any state not allowing us to buy a weapon to meet said imminent perceived threat can be sued in US District court with a full five year statute of limitations.
This could be big for New Jersey and its abusive FID process. This would give us recourse against the state and municipalities who draw out the issuance of FID and purchase permits to three months or more.
