According to the Tax Foundation today April 30 is National Tax Freedom Day. That is, on average, Americans finish paying all tax burdens to federal, state, and local governments and from here on out, all of their earnings belong to themselves and their families.
Unfortunately for us, New Jersey is not your average state with your average tax burden. Residents of New Jersey do not enjoy tax freedom until May 10 (page 7 of the above report). That is the third highest tax burden in the country. What do we get for all of those taxes we pay? Well, for starters, we are last among all states for federal resources returned to us.
