A Day Late, A Dollar Short PDF Print E-mail
Written by President

Well, that was the most excruciating three weeks I can recall.  Finally, after all the tumult subsides, the mighty NRA finally makes a statement about the Virginia Tech incident. And what did they say?  Nothing, really, other than to make excuses for not being out in front on the issue.

The NRA's President, Wayne LaPierre is quoted as saying "What does it hurt to pause for a few days in the midst of a tragedy to let the families of the victims grieve in peace".  The problem, Wayne, is that you guys just don't "get it".  Those families needed your support, not your silence.  They needed you to call the legislators that voted down the anti-gun bill to account for their heinous error.

Waiting for three weeks to discuss the failings of gun control is like reporting on an aircraft crash a month after it happens.  The moment is passed.  It's not newsworthy anymore, and nobody is paying attention.  America's eye is turned elsewhere to other issues of the day, like the Democratic and Republican debates.

Once again, the NRA never fails to disappoint.  Though it's high-minded to want to take the high road, the Brady Bunch wasted no time capitalizing on this tradgedy, and neither should we.

The NJCSD, JPFO, SAS and many other rights groups knew that in this game of winning the public's understanding of issues in a sound-bite world, tomorrow turns into yesterday in the blink of an eye, and the opportunity to get your point across is missed.  We made statements within days, not weeks, in time to get the point across.

Time to fight fire with fire.  Tomorrow is a day late and a dollar short, and those who believe in freedom will always be playing "catch-up" and losing our rights if we look to NRA to set the pace for framing the dialog and timing of our message.
