These kids have my deep respect:
Two home-schooled teenagers in this northern Idaho town say they are carrying loaded guns to the library, grocery store and other public areas for self-defense, as a crime deterrent, and to educate others about their rights.
Zach Doty, 18, carries a loaded Glock handgun on his hip. His 15-year-old brother, Steven, carries a .22-caliber rifle in a sling on his back.
Police have been called on several occasions to question the teens but have not found the teens to be in violation of the law.
If they tried this in NJ, there'd be a shoot-on-sight order in force against them. These kids are well schooled in the principles of history and liberty:
"If I was an extremist, our founding fathers would all be extremists," he said. "Without them, we wouldn't have our independence. We'd be a disarmed British system of feudal subjectivity."
But as you can imagine, such in-your-face activism isn't going to always be so well received. Even in a state like Idaho (too many transplanted Californians):
Ed Santos owns Center Target Sports in Post Falls and is a gun safety instructor. He said the Dotys came to his shop but he doesn't sell handgun ammunition to people under 21.
He said that just because the Dotys are carrying guns in public doesn't mean they're not responsible with them, but questioned the need to carry them in town even though it was legal.
"My advice for them is the same as it is with adults — yes it's your right and yes it's legal, but why draw unnecessary attention to yourself just because you can?" Santos said. "I believe the intent (of the law) was to allow it more for hunting and recreation."
Of all the people in town to be so ignorant about the Second Amendment and the RKBA, this guy Santos has no excuse. People like him in the Second Amendment community are the very reason for the sorry state of affairs for the legal recognition of the RKBA. The undue attention the boys get while carrying proves a point. It is hardly a right you can freely exercise if every Joe Schmoe is going to report you to the authorities.
Carry on, men!
[Update] A much more extensive article on the boys can be found here. Great quote:
Zach said another reason for open carrying is a "test."
"I'm trying to test to see if the Constitution means anything," he said. "Part of the issue is to test to see exactly how much freedom we have in this nation."
He said the second time police stopped him, it appeared to be harassment because one of the officers indicated he recognized Zach from the previous encounter.
"It's the job of the law to protect people trying to exercise their rights," Zach said.
