Corzine is expected to nominate Attorney General Stuart Rabner for chief justice of the Nj Supreme Court. He could serve until 2030 when he reaches the mandatory retirement age.
Much like the governership of New Jersey, the position of chief justice is quite powerful. The chief justice is soley responsible for promoting judges from the NJ superior court system into the NJ appellete court. He also determines the length of time they server there and there assignments.
Rabner has no experience on the bench having previously been turned down for a federal judgeship and a NJ superior judgeship so there is no telling what kind of judge he will make. But if he is confirmed (which is likely in this state) I hope he is the right man to serve for the next generation.
[UPDATE] Here is a sample of some of the shenanigans that go on with NJ Supreme Court justices.
