Phoenix Chopper Crash: Bad News for America PDF Print E-mail

What do Lidsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, OJ Simpson and today's helicopter crash in Phoenix, AZ have in common?

An intellectually shallow audience in America obsessed with style over substance, entralled by chase scenes and tawdry, cheap behavior.

I have long denounced law enforcement's policy of 'hot pursuit' of suspects.  Criminals who are depraved enough to become engaged in felonies will just be driven to more desperate acts when pursued by the screaming sirens of squad cars and TV cameras in the air.  This practice of 'hot pursuit' thrusts dangerous men and women into crowded city streets where any number of bystanders are placed in jeopardy.

To my way of thinking, there's a hidden implication behind this policy that the 'system' of justice has taken on a life of its own and is more important than the people it's intended to serve.  There's a warning sign for America, if ever we saw one, when government employees consider the perception of their jobs to be more critical than the freedoms or safety of the citizenry.

And the media in our nation willingly obliges, just as they oblige the anti-gun lemmings who are not interested in truth, but visceral entertainment.

But what would we expect in a country where the top programs are "reality" shows, celebrity scandals and a singleminded pursuit of the trivial and mediocre?  Where are the programs which exemplify good conduct?  Where are the programs about our men and women in uniform fighting for freedom?  Or the millions of unsung volunteers sacrificing their personal time to defend our rights here at home?  Where are the John Waynes, Sergeant Yorks and Roy Rogers of America?  Where are the men and women who exemplified stoic dignity and courage in the most desperate of circumstances.

The answer is to be found in the "feel good" days in which we live, as promulgated by left-leaning indoctrination centers (that's 'public education' if you didn't know) and overindulgent parents who are too busy being "friends" to their kids, and have no time for their families, because both parents must work to be able to keep up with the cost of living and a government tax base out of control that consumes up to 50% of our incomes.  If this isn't communism, I don't know what is.

Is it any wonder why our children have completely lost their social graces and decorum when they see Britney's bare bottom, Paris' pedantic pontifications, or Lindsey's latenight liquor runs plastered over every TV screen?  And where are the parents who ought to be taking time to explain to their teen children that this kind of behavior is not to be condoned, no matter what they see on the tube?

In months to come, I might sit down and put thoughts to paper (or keyboard) about how and why we've come to this point.  But for now, this is just one more exaple of how our deteriorated sense of what's "news" isn't about a search for fact, but promotion of an agenda.  One might easily argue that the deaths today were caused by the very business they're in.  If you live by sensationalism, you're likely to die the same way, in a fireball falling from the sky.

Don't get me wrong.  It's a terrible tragedy.  But one wonders if it might have been prevented the way liberals tell us that "gun violence" can be prevented, without making the connection that it's the very culture of crasse they're promulgating that's causing the very condition they deplore.

Perhaps we ought to start licensing broadcasters on a personal basis, the way we license gun owners, since the media's actions lead to senseless deaths.  After all, if it saves one life, it's worth it, right?
